Innovations

The latest milestones in the ebu product programme by Burkhardt GmbH, a renowned system supplier of innovative punching and forming lines, is the first servo drive concept in presses patented by Burkhardt in Germany, which is today on the market in varieties that are continually being expanded, as well as an innovative strip feeding and coil processing system. The Bayreuth based machine builder offers further attractive solutions in the feeding and precision straightening technology, which fully comply with the state of the art standard. The new machines and components consider the economic and ecological aspects and contribute to cost-effective production for the operator.

With the ebu punching machines ebu STA-G (cast iron construction) and ebu STA Monobloc (welded-steel construction), optionally also available with servo drives, Burkhardt offers high-performance machines, up to 10,000kN press force, with persuasive user-benefits. They feature very high rigidity, low deflection performance, optimal input and long service life of the tools and have uncomplicated, demand-oriented operator guidance. All ebu models are built following the design principles rigorously pursued by Burkhardt and excel particularly by standardised flange connections.

The correct drive can be chosen and upgraded for each application. The following variants with individual strengths are available:

  • Direct drive for higher stroke rates and easier punching tasks

  • Intermediate gear with planetary gear for greater work energy even in the low speed range

  • Draw crank drive

  • A patented servo drive and its successor systems ensure flexibility in the application and power in operation and an increase in output.

An important innovation in the ebu servo drive technology is the implementation of two 500 kilowatt strong torque engines, which transfer their torque of 5000 Nm each across a transfer gear on the press ram.

With the new development, the ebu automatization concept is already oriented to future requirements.

The unique, universally applicable coiler centre ebu HCC, (on the market as a prototype since the end of 2008) eases and automatises the handling of even larger, broader and heavier coils through its innovative construction with maximum security and, at the same time, comfort of ergonomic working.

Meanwhile the following objectives will be implemented in the further development, which contribute to economic manufacturing:

  • Automated movement

  • Optimisation of the speeds and synchronisation of individual travelling axes

  • Technologically improved construction in consideration of the requirements of the real production processes

  • Improvement of process security, now significantly more materials and dimensions can be loaded fully-automatically

  • Continuous security concept, the danger potential is significantly reduced compared to conventional systems

  • Further simplified, user-friendly service

Depending on the work requirements, the coiler drives to the relevant insertion height with the coil, independently picked up from the coil carriage, and makes the pull-down operation possible from the moderated coiler by unwinding either from above or below. It also offers the possibility of unwinding across the main drive with loops from below, in the case of thicker strips. Even the threading of the end of the strip into the straightening machine takes place automatically. Alongside the paired coilers provided, there is also the driveable coil carriage. The systems are well complemented by optional extra equipment, which is available, such as coil station and light barrier control. The service of the ebu HCC takes place via a modern SIMATIC Mobile Panel 277 IWLAN by Siemens with brilliant 7.5" TFT touch screen display and advanced security technology across specified effective ranges.

The electronic ebu roll feed attachments are distinguishable by fast and precise changes to the coiled strip material. The product range offers designs for the processing of thicknesses up to 8.0 mm and material breadths of up to 1500 mm.

With the optimised roll feed attachment programme, BURKHARDT also offers a very slimline construction that, for upgrading, can be attached to presses of all makes or can be applied as basic equipment.

The modern feeding spool control can be connected to any press controller and offers clear input and display of feeding lengths and sliders and an intelligent calculation of dimensional chains. Simple adjustments and corrections are possible during operation. The network-supported data connection is currently being prepared.

In the case of the new feeders, the easy accessibility is to be highlighted. Thus the fast and thorough cleaning of the precision roll feed attachments is possible without a problem and is practice-oriented.

The high-performance precision straightening machine ebu FRM 21.30-630 with 21 straightening rollers is predestined for low-stress precision straightening of strip materials with a thickness of up to 5 mm and a breadth of 30 mm to 1500 mm.

The 21 roller precision straightening machine is suitable for very high requirements on the precise flatness of the materials. An argument for the use of this machine is its user-friendly concept and maintainability. Thus the straightening cassettes are easily removed for cleaning or changing with minimum handling via solid and readily accessible move-outs from the machine and are easily entered back into the body of the machine and reattached. The operation of all precision straightening rollers takes place evenly via universal shafts. The discharger roller cage and the strip loop control form part of the standard delivery package.

The ebu combined strip feeding and straightening combinations are intelligent solutions for strip systems in small spaces. The ebu VRM 9.60-250 model combines strip feeding and straightening combinations for strip systems in short design, for strip thicknesses of up to 6.0 mm and breadths of 1500 mm offer the highest service and maintenance comfort. Thanks to the possibility of single withdrawal the straightening rollers can be cleaned super-fast, even in the case of a coil change. The precision feeding is increased by the option of the metering wheel. The precision straightening rollers are synchronised via transfer gear and universal shafts.

The Burkhardt retrofit programme has a large performance spectrum. Thanks to the use of the aforementioned model construction types, all older machines and systems can be converted for a more economical and efficient production wit hardly any problems. Even foreign brands can be modernized with the new ebu components.

The compliance with the, as of December 2009, newly composed and obligatory Machinery Directive (MD 2006/42/EG) is a matter of course with Burkhardt and fully implemented as part of all deliveries, regardless if new or used machines.
